MALAMULO COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES STUDENTS ON A HEALTH OUTREACH CAMPAIGN

There is hope that Njale Primary school pupils’ absenteesm due to illnesses is going to decrease following the medical assistance given to them by students from Malamulo College of Health Sciences and their counterpart from the United States. The students were on an outreach health campaign in primary schools far from Malamulo Mission hospital in Thyolo district.

During the campaign, the pupils were taught about good health, got tested of different diseases and those who were sick were given mission medicine.

According to Tamidayo, the project director, the school was chosen because it is very far from the nearest hospital which is Malamulo. To make matters worse, Malamulo is a private hospital and therefore poor people are forced to walk a 30Km journey to Thyolo district hospital for free medical assistance.

“We are here because there are no hospitals close by. We chose to do our work at a school like this because most of the times children are at school and rarely complain when they are not feeling fine. We regret because some pupils are not going to be assisted because of time but we promise to come back and finish in a few weeks. We want to fulfill their health needs so that they can fully concentrate in class”, said Tamidayo.

Upon receiving the assistance, Njale Primary School Head teacher, Beyamu, appreciated the students and encouraged them to frequently come to those pupils who are in critical conditions at home so that they can also be assisted. He added that it is his hope that the pupils who have benefited from the campaign are going to work harder and progress with their education since school is easy when a pupil is fine.

There are about 1200 pupils at Njale Full Primary School and over 200 got the medical assistance and some were given references to go to Malamulo Mission Hospital.
